I would like to thank our Alberta Elks Association for giving me the chance to serve as your Provincial President for the 2011-2012 term. Congratulations to Jackie Townrow for her election to the position of Provincial President of the Alberta Royal Purple.

My Theme this year is “One Step Back to Move Forward.” I believe that in our haste to streamline and make things less complicated, we might be losing some of our heritage. Shortening our opening and closing, and going to less formal regalia, may be good in lots of ways but I would like to make sure we preserve our traditions. If we don’t we will become just another community service club.

I would like every Elks Lodge in our Association, even if they just do round table, to take a little time in their meetings to go over their Ritual, so that all members, new and old understand what each station means. The statement “I hold in my hand a treasured book”. What does that mean to you? “I hold in my hand the Canadian Flag.” Why is that part of our Ritual? Every Lodge should have one or more members that can do the 11:00 service well, and some time should be spent at lodge to go over the 11:00 service line by line to help members understand what it means. Many of our new members have not been taught what our Ritual means to an Elk and what sets us apart from other volunteer groups. If you memorize or even read it well that is great but it means very little if you do not understand what each part means. Food for thought: it takes approximately ten minutes to do both opening and closing in long form in a lodge meeting. Maybe we could take that time more often for the benefit of newcomers.

We, as an Association, are working on our four building blocks, of ritual, regalia, leadership and projects just as lodges should be doing in their own communities. The Provincial Association has committed significant time and money towards advancing the leadership training which is an important part of our future as an organization.

In closing, I would thank all of you for becoming a member of the greatest volunteer group in Canada and donating your time and money to our National and Provincial Charities. Without you, these charities would not exist and many people would not get the help they need.
